Revalidation / Relicensure

The recent white paper on revalidation has placed appraisal in a new light:

In light of the new papers on relicensure, this years appraisal (2007-8) aim to support you in gathering appropriate evidence for your relicensure portfolio. It is envisaged that appraisal will remain a formative process and that all GPs will need to undertake an appraisal each year. Undertaking an annual appraisal is part of your contract with the PCT. However, the evidence collected and the learning plans produced will need to be more detailed. Some support will come from your appraiser. It is however each GPs responsibility if they have not done so ready to begin to compile a portfolio of evidence.

A national programme to help build structure for portfolios is in place. This is called The Leicester Statement on Evidence for Appraisal. It is being evaluated and is still optional to use.

It contains many templates and explanations.

It can be web or paper based and there are instructions too:

The statement highlights the different types of evidence that will be required, essential, personal, organisational and additional. Templates to help in the collation of evidence are available and the programme is being evaluated. It may therefore change before relicensure becomes mandatory.
